Stay Safe, Swim Wild: Essential Safety Tips for Wild Swimming

Wild swimming - immersing yourself in Scotland’s lochs, rivers, and coastline - is a liberating experience that reconnects us with nature and ourselves. At Stravaig, we’re passionate about helping our community “wander freely,” but we know that true adventure starts with safety.

Whether you’re dipping your toes in for the first time or you’re a seasoned swimmer chasing new challenges, understanding how to stay safe is the most important part of enjoying wild waters. That’s why we work with trusted experts like Laura Williamson of Lakes2Lochs, who brings years of coaching experience and a deep love for open water to every session.

Why Safety Matters in Wild Swimming

Open water is unpredictable. Weather, water temperature, currents, and even your own energy levels can change quickly. The right preparation and knowledge can make the difference between a magical swim and a risky situation. Here’s what every wild swimmer should keep in mind:

1. Know Your Location

Research your swim spot before you go. Check for safe entry and exit points, water depth, and any local hazards (like strong currents or underwater obstacles). If you’re new to an area, join a guided swim or ask local swimmers for advice.

2. Never Swim Alone

Swimming with others is not just more fun - it’s safer. Peer support means help is at hand if you get into difficulty. Many wild swimming groups meet regularly; joining one is a great way to build confidence and make new friends.

3. Dress for the Conditions

Scottish waters are chilly, even in summer. A quality changing robe - like our sherpa fleece-lined Stravaig robes - helps you stay warm before and after your swim. Consider a wetsuit for longer swims or colder weather, and always use a brightly coloured tow float for visibility.

4. Understand Cold Water Shock

Sudden immersion in cold water can cause gasping, rapid breathing, and panic. Enter the water slowly, give your body time to adjust, and focus on calm, steady breaths.

5. Respect Your Limits

Listen to your body. If you’re tired, cold, or unsure, it’s okay to cut your swim short. Build up gradually and don’t feel pressured to keep up with more experienced swimmers.
